So, I went out with my good friend Angie last night. I was desperately in need of some “gal time”.
Last time I saw her she was complaining of sore breasts from feeding her 7 month old. But last night she was smiling.
When I asked her what was new, she proceeded to pull a cabbage leaf out of her bra! Seemingly she had read in I’m a Mom! Now What? that it helped reduce soreness, and now she swears by it.
So I felt obliged to pass on the tip.
And the side benefit – it can also solve the ongoing dilemma of what’s for dinner! I’ve been told that steamed cabbage is quite nutritious.
But if you are breast-feeding yourself, do go easy on it. When I was breast-feeding I found that cabbage (and also broccoli or beans) can produce some rather “colorful” diapers.

Hmmm, cabbage huh? Does it matter what type of cabbage you use I wonder? Seems like that would be very uncomfortable! But hey, whatever works!

I thought it was odd too. Not that I didn’t believe Angie, but I did some homework. Turns out, in European folk medicine cabbage leaves have long been used to treat acute inflammation. Apparently they contain an amino acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties.
As for the discomfort… according to Wikipedia, “The leaves are softened by parboiling or placing the whole head of cabbage in the FREEZER…”
Now THAT I’m not so sure about.
